Pause, move cheese to first slot, unpause, quickly right click, etc. You probably won't want to do this forever, but this helps you get used to the skull cavern. You are not here to sightsee. You're not even really there to collect materials. If you see a staircase, take it, even if there's an iridium node RIGHT THERE.
