The key locates the flywheel in the proper relationship to the crankshaft and hence timing cannot get drastically out of spec unless someone has messed with the advance linkage.

At full-throttle the carburetors would run low on fuel and the engine would stumble. Squeezing the primer bulb re-filled the bowls, and then [the engine] would run fine again.
